Warm Ups 2

41. You don’t have to look at all of these portraits, but look at a variety. Choose three bloggers who you feel showcased a variety of emotions well. And tell me why. Also, some photos were posted as a group, and some were posted individually. Do you think the way the photos were presented added to the overall feeling of the photos?

Brandon Medoza, Mary Xitco, Elaina Sewell. I think that these three photographers showcased emotion very well. They knew what they wanted to do and executed it professionally. The photos came out nicely and it is easily visible what the person in the photo is feeling. I kind of prefer the grid set up for the project just because you can see and compare all of the photos more easily, however it works both ways and I think that each set up worked for each set of models and photographers.

40. Check out these two blog posts about taking portraits. Not all of them will apply to what we are doing. Write down ten things you think might be helpful when trying to photograph your subject’s emotions.

I often try to take photos from a different perspective. It makes the feel of the photo change completely and it is unexpected. I will be using the idea to take pictures when my subject isn't really paying attention to it (candid) for more real photos. I will also try some with a wide angle. And take multiple of ones that seem almost the same, this will help just in case there is a slighty closed eye or something with lighting, have more options. I might try to play with eye contact, depending on the emotion I am trying to portray. I will experiement with lighting until I find one suitable.

39. If you could be any animal, what would you be?

I love all animals, so this is a difficult question. The two ideas running in my head are very different. The first would be a dog, they are loyal and unconditionally loved, giving that same love back in return. They are always happy and everyone (who is someone I can talk to) gets their day brightened when interacting with one of these lovelies. The other idea would be a snow leopard. I just think they are incredibly majestic and strong. They are beautiful but hold their own, they can be dangerous and they are protective of their own. I have always been in awe of them.

38. What is this project about? Scroll through the photos. Which photo/photographer did you enjoy the most? Why?

This project is showing the face behind the work. People see beautiful pictures and admire them, but this project allows the person to credit for these photos be known. To proudly display their work while standing along side it. I enjoyed looking at all of these pictures, but my favorite was Steve McCurry and “Afghan Girl”. This is because you can really see the emotion in the photo, through her eyes and all over her face. It is very real. The intensity is amplified with the way the photographer manipulated the lighting and shadows. It is a very nice piece of work.

37. Choose 5 Social Issue ideas and brainstorm how you might go about taking or creating photos.

Littering - I could easily find trash just walking around and get plenty of photos, of course I could place some as well. This is an issue that needs changing.
Bullying - This set of pictures would be set up and show the process of bullying and the after-affect of the harmful words and actions.
Kids toys - Kids outgrowing toys and letting them rust instead of letting new generations enjoy them. There are toys like this all over my backyard.
Cheating - This would be difficult and very touchy, needs to be done right. Obviously staged, and not a real scenario.
Racism -  Similar to the bullying concept, but focusing on someone of color.

36. What's your favorite thing about living in San Diego.

100% the weather. I love that there is a consistent warm temperature here. I do not do well in heat, so it helps that it is not humid. I can enjoy the cold sometimes, but would not like to endure it 24/7. The beaches are really nice too, however I do not go there very often. I need to more. That's my plan anyway.

35. What did you do over the long weekend?

Over the weekend, I spent most of my time with my boyfriend or working on his birthday present. We went to see Black Panther, ate at Fat Sal's, went to a soccer game, ate KFC on a mountain, went to his friend's birthday party at a pizza place. I also fed the homeless Saturday morning. It is always a nice experience, especially when they tell you how much they appreciate your time and effort. I helped make food and then served it. Other than that, the usual Netflix and YouTube time was used.

34. Google Image search "light painting." Find 3 examples you like, and include them in your post. What do you like about them? How do you think they were created? If you right click the photo, or press control while clicking the photo, you have an option to save the image to your desktop. Please delete image from desktop after posting.

I chose these light painting images because, it adds the illusion of features that are clearly not there naturally. They have clear themes and were portrayed perfectly. They must have taken multiple shots in order to get it right, especially with the last photo with the woman having to be perfectly placed in the air without looking as if she had jumped. I can only imagine how much time they had to take in order to display the image in their head. I think that it worked out well and I really enjoy them.

33. Which images do you like (choose 5) and how do you think they were created?

The first of my five favorite light pictures is one that is made to look like a spirally-stemmed flower. It is very a very light, singular color with an opposing black background. It is very detailed for what it is. The next is one that is take in a dark room that looks like smoke coming from a candle, it obviously is not in actuality, but it is very captivating. Another one of my favorites is a man with a bunch of orangey-red light around him. I like this one because it looks very sporadic, but it needs to be controlled in order to get the photo. Next is another one that looks like a flower, however this one includes more colors and is a flower bud instead of one that is open. It has a lot of stems/leaves coming out of the sides and just looks very soothing. The last one is a photo of a paintbrush with purple light trailing after it. The brush is not marking its path with typical paint, but is still lighting the way. It is definitely nice to look at.

32.If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I personally want to go everywhere and see everything. I have always wanted to go to Europe, the typical Paris adventure. Luckily for me, this summer I am taking a trip with my mom and brother to London, Amsterdam, Belgium, and Paris. I could not be more excited. I have also always wanted to go to Greece, my friend and I said that some day we will go together. It is also possible that my mom and I will go after I graduate college, at least it's an idea.

31. A lot of magazines are trying to use more realistic and natural photos, however many magazines still use extreme Photoshopping for their ads and covers. What do you think of this practice? What do you think it says to consumers?

I do not like the way that big name magazines photoshop people so that they will fit nicely on the cover. It is not right to change the way someone is because a certain group of people think they could be better. It also tells people who look like the person did originally that they aren't good enough either, especially if they already felt that they looked worse than the model. It is a fake and horrible thing to do, those companies should not alter people's bodies.

30. Describe the photo. This photo has interesting perspective, and no Photoshop was used. How was it created? What elements do you see and where? (When I ask, I want the dominant elements. We often see most of them in most of our photos!)

The photo has a very interesting perspective, it looks almost as if the man in the picture is standing upright, but when you look at the background, it reveals that he is actually sideways out of a window. This was accomplished by tilting the camera in the exact same angle that the guy was at, it makes it focus on him and is the first thing to look at. It also shows that it is a very moment stopped in time picture with the blur of the background caused by the moving train.

29. What do you do when you are bored?

Most of my free time is spent with electronics. Either on YouTube, Netfilx, or social media. I enjoy just letting my brain rest and not having to think, just getting a break. I also enjoy playing with my dog, he keeps me very entertained and I can look at nothing cuter than him. I tend to listen to music a lot, it helps with whatever mood I am in and I love having songs to relate to. I very much like to spend time with headphones in and just tuning out the world.

28. What are the differences between these triptychs? Which one do you like best and why?

The first and the third triptychs make up one full image when put side by side. It is meant to look like pieces to put together to make a whole. The second, however, is capturing the essential parts of their focus. It does not come together to make a complete picture, but it rather shows all that is needed to understand what they are photographing.

27. Our next project is going to be a photographic narrative. Google it. What is it, and how would you go about doing one?

It is the idea that photos, laid out, can tell a story when taken in a series that directs it that way. The key is to take pictures that have a good distance of time in between them. You don't want the viewer to be confused with where it's going if it jumps around too much, but you don't want to have it too close and have overly similar photos. I think that I am going to incorporate my dog and my sister for my project. Though this will make the situation harder to control, it is good to challenge myself in the process.
